Hawaii Farmers Union's 'Mahi'ai Makahiki' Convention Returns Oct. 25
The 15th annual Hawaii Farmers Union convention, themed 'Mahi'ai Makahiki', is set to take place on Saturday, Oct. 25. The event, organized by Hawaii Farmers Union United, will honour the role of agriculture and food production in sustaining communities. It will be held at Kahaluu Ma Kai, Alii Drive, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is open to the public for free.
The convention will feature panel discussions on crucial topics such as farm and food safety, food hubs, loko'la, near-shore fisheries, and organic certification. Educational offerings include the 'Microbial Hive' and demonstrations on mitigating local agricultural challenges. Speakers include Hawaii Rep. Kirstin Kahaloa, Dr. Noa Kekuewa Lincoln, Dr. Saleh Azizi, and Dr. Noeau Perala. Chef Bryan Fujikawai of KGH Catering will provide lunch and dinner menus sourced from Hawaii Island.
The day will also include Makahiki games like moa pahe'e, 'ulu maika, and he'e maia. Informational booths by various organizations will be set up, and Malama Honua Charter School students will demonstrate taro pounding. Following the convention, dinner will be served from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., with entertainment by Maka Gallinger & Son and Ku Ma'ema'e until 9 p.m.
The 15th annual Hawaii Farmers Union convention promises to be an engaging and informative event, bringing together farmers, educators, policymakers, and the public to celebrate and discuss the importance of agriculture and food production in Hawaii.
