Hamburg S-Bahn Service: 96% of Trains Operate on Time
Improved S-Bahn Hamburg Performance in 2024: 96% of Trains Arrive On Time
The Hamburg S-Bahn has shown significant improvement in 2024, with 95.9% of trains arriving on time, a 1.3% increase from the previous year. Green party member Anjes Tjarks, the Transport Senator, stated that the company is carrying more traffic than ever before, while also boasting the best punctuality record.
Increased Train Operations
The S-Bahn Hamburg considers a train as punctual if it is delayed by less than three minutes. Missed trains are not counted in the statistics. Nonetheless, the railway system has also seen an improvement in this aspect, with only 1.7% of trains failing to operate. This translates to over 400,000 additional punctual departures compared to 2023.
The railway network was expanded in 2024, according to Tjarks, resulting in 23,000 additional train journeys. The southern part of Hamburg particularly benefits from the modifications, with more long-distance trains now in service. These longer trains have the capacity to carry an additional nearly 16 million passengers each year.
Network Expansion until 2030
In 2023, the S-Bahn lines S11, S21, and S31 were discontinued in Hamburg, and their services integrated into other lines to alleviate the overburdened S-Bahn network in the city.
The plans aim to further expand the railway network by 2030. Tjarks expressed that the goal is to attract 50% more passengers for public transportation and accelerate the mobility transformation. The improved S-Bahn network will play a crucial role in achieving this goal.
