Hamburg Port Launches €1.2M Hydrogen Locomotive Project for 2035 CO2-Neutrality
The Port of Hamburg has initiated a collaborative project management effort, 'SH2under@ports', with the goal of transitioning shunting locomotives to hydrogen-powered engines. This project, backed by over 1.2 million euros from the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport, involves six key partners. The primary objective is to render the Port of Hamburg CO2-neutral by 2035.
The project, slated to conclude in May 2024, will delve into the prerequisites and requirements for switching to hydrogen drives, refuelling conditions, and safety and legal aspects. If successful, the locomotives could be refuelled with green hydrogen and operated climate-neutrally using fuel cells. The insights gained will be integrated into a concrete implementation plan, potentially applicable to other ports and shunting operations.
The partners in this project management initiative are Hamburg Port Authority, Eisenbahnen und Verkehrsbetriebe Elbe-Weser GmbH, Smart Mobility Institute, Institute for Energy and Circular Economy, Alstom, and Bremenports. They aim to provide perspectives for infrastructure changes in port operations using green hydrogen.
The 'SH2under@ports' project is a significant stride towards making the Port of Hamburg CO2-neutral by 2035. The findings and implementation plan from this project management effort will not only benefit the Port of Hamburg but also other ports and shunting operations in the future.
