The German Green Party has announced an ambitious plan to create 100,000 new pedestrian crossings across Germany, as part of their broader commitment to promote pedestrian safety, urban mobility, and environmentally friendly transportation.

Key aspects of the plan include a massive expansion of pedestrian infrastructure to make walking safer and more convenient, and the redistribution of street space to favour pedestrians and cyclists over cars. This initiative is part of a larger vision to improve quality of life through better urban planning, increased safety, and reduced emissions by supporting non-motorized travel modes.

Oliver Krischer, the Green politician and parliamentary vice-president, stated that more pedestrian crossings would enhance traffic safety, particularly in residential areas. He also highlighted the party's intention to simplify traffic regulations regarding the justification of each pedestrian crossing in Germany, making it easier for municipalities to implement the project.

Currently, each pedestrian crossing in Germany needs to be individually justified. The Greens' plan to simplify these regulations will enable the creation of new crossings, particularly in areas where they are currently not allowed due to daily traffic regulations.

The Greens also plan to financially support municipalities in implementing the project to create new pedestrian crossings. This support is expected to make children safer on the road, as more pedestrian crossings would reduce the risks associated with road crossings for young pedestrians.

While specific implementation details, such as funding sources, locations, and timelines, have not been fully detailed publicly, the Green Party’s proposal clearly signals a strong focus on pedestrian-friendly urban environments as a cornerstone of their transport and city planning policies for the upcoming legislative period.

This pedestrian crossing initiative fits within the Greens’ broader agenda of promoting modal shifts away from cars towards walking, cycling, and public transport, which also includes expanding cycle lanes and improving pedestrian infrastructure in cities.

The Greens consider the restriction of pedestrian crossings in 30 km/h zones as nonsensical, and they believe that more pedestrian crossings would enhance traffic safety. This plan, if realised, could significantly improve pedestrian safety and urban mobility in Germany.
