Government in Pakistan finalizes strategy to distribute Natural Gas (RLNG) connections across the country for domestic use.
Pakistan to Roll Out Nationwide RLNG Connections for Households
In a significant move towards energy efficiency and affordability, the Government of Pakistan has finalized a plan to provide Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) connections to households across the country. The initiative, a priority of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to meet the growing public demand for clean and affordable energy, was discussed in a meeting chaired by Ali Pervaiz Malik, the Federal Minister for Petroleum.
The plan aims to fulfill the long-standing demand of the public, as stated by Malik. To facilitate the public and ensure transparency, the application process for these connections will be streamlined. Consumers will now be able to apply online through the official websites and mobile applications of the Sui companies, in addition to the traditional method of applying at their local offices.
A dedicated Project Management Office (PMO) will be created at both Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL) for effective oversight. This PMO will closely monitor the entire process, from application to connection, ensuring targets are met, and addressing public grievances promptly.
The Managing Directors of SNGPL and SSGCL presented a detailed strategy for the effective implementation of the government's directive. While the specifics of this strategy were not disclosed, it is clear that the government is committed to making the transition to RLNG as smooth as possible.
Shifting to RLNG is a move towards energy efficiency and provides significant economic relief to households, as it is approximately 30% cheaper than LPG and a safer fuel option for domestic use. The government has not yet specified a target for the number of new RLNG connections to be provided within the first year, but the ambition is clear.
Applicants who have already paid for a demand note can now submit the differential amount along with the security fee to become eligible for an RLNG connection under this new initiative. As the plan moves forward, more details are expected to be announced.
The meeting, which took place on a Friday, was attended by the Secretary of Petroleum, Additional Secretary, Director General Gas, representatives of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), and the Managing Directors of both SNGPL and SSGCL. The project manager overseeing the creation of the PMO at SNGPL and SSGCL is named Muhammad Aslam.
This ambitious plan is a significant step towards providing clean and affordable energy to households across Pakistan, and it is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of many. As more details emerge, we will keep you updated.
