Plummeting Trade: Germany Distsancing from Russia

Trade relations between Russia and Germany diminish substantially - Germany's Trade Significance with Russia Wanes

In a significant shift, Germany's trade ties with Russia have witnessed a dramatic decline, marked by a staggering drop in imports and exports, mainly due to EU sanctions and energy diversification efforts.

After the European Union aggressively sanctioned Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, trade between Germany and Russia has taken a nosedive. The sanctions targeted Russia's energy, industrial, and financial sectors, resulting in a massive reduction in trade between the two countries[1][3][4].

Before the war, Russia was a significant energy supplier for Germany. However, by 2024, the country primarily imported metals, chemical products, food, and feed from Russia, while exporting pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and machinery[2]. The imposition of the 17th EU sanctions package in May 2024 further tightened restrictions on Russian oil and oil products transportation[4].

This downward trend in trade is evident in the drastic drop in Germany's imports from Russia. In 2024, imports plummeted by a staggering 94.6% from €33.1 billion in 2021 to just €1.8 billion[1][2][4]. On the other hand, exports to Russia shrank by 71.6% from €26.6 billion to €7.6 billion during the same period[1][2][4].

The EU as a whole has also reduced its trade with Russia substantially, with imports crashing from around €163.6 billion in 2021 to €36 billion in 2024, and exports falling by 64.6% within three years[1]. In 2024, the EU only exported goods worth around €31.6 billion to Russia[1].

Russia's share of Germany's total imports dwindled to around 0.1% in 2024, down from 2.8% in 2021, and its share of all goods exports from Germany fell to 0.5% in 2024, down from 1.9% in 2021. This caused Russia to drop to 59th place among Germany's most important supplier countries in 2024, a noticeable fall from 12th place in 2021[1]. In exports, Russia was in 36th place in 2024, down from 15th place in 2021[1].

  1. The employment policy within Germany's industry and financial sectors may need to address the consequences of the EU sanctions against Russia, as these sectors have been significantly impacted by the trade restrictions.
  2. In light of the war-and-conflicts in Ukraine and the subsequent EU sanctions on Russia, general news outlets and community policies should focus on providing accurate and timely information about the economic impact on both Germany and Russia.
  3. The ongoing reduction in trade between Germany and Russia, as a result of EU sanctions and energy diversification efforts, may have political implications, as other countries and industries might consider the potential impact of similar financial measures on their own trade relationships.
