Germany's Schwerdtner calls for federal government action: Reverse the price hike!
The Left Party has raised concerns about an upcoming increase in the price of the Germany Ticket, warning that it could jeopardize the ticket's success. In a meeting on September 19, 2025, the Left Party's Executive Board convened to discuss the issue.
The federal government is under fire for planning to invest over 100 billion in the railways by 2029, yet not allocating 800 million for the Germany Ticket. The Left Party is criticizing the government for not providing sufficient funds for the ticket, which could make it less attractive to potential passengers.
According to the decision made by the conference of transport ministers of the German federal states on September 18, 2025, the price of the Germany Ticket is set to increase from 58 euros to 63 euros starting in 2026. This monthly increase would amount to 60 euros per year.
However, the Left Party is advocating for a significant reduction in the price of the Germany Ticket to make it more appealing. The party is suggesting that the federal government should cover the additional costs to keep the price stable. Ines Schwerdtner, Chairwoman of the Left Party, was present at the meeting and emphasized the benefits of an affordable public transport ticket, including relief for people, easing congestion, and environmental benefits.
Schwerdtner went on to express her concerns that many people have reached their pain threshold at the current price of 58 euros for the Germany Ticket. She urged the federal government to maintain the price to avoid the ticket ending up on the sidelines. The party is concerned that an increase in the price could scare off many passengers and jeopardize the success of the ticket.
The Left Party is calling upon the federal government to make the Germany Ticket more attractive and significantly reduce its price. If the government does not set the right course, the party warns that the Germany Ticket may end up on the sidelines. The Left Party's urgent appeal to the federal government comes at a time when many people are struggling with the cost of living and are looking for affordable solutions for their daily commute.
