Widow's Pension: How to Calculate It with Your Own Pension? - Germany's 2025 Pension Tax Changes: More Support for Survivors
In 2025, the taxation of pensions and widow's pensions in Germany has seen changes. The basic tax allowance for pensioners stands at 12,084 euros, with additional allowances for widow's pensions.
The tax-free allowance for widow's pension is 1038.05 euros for singles, calculated from the current pension value per pension point (39.32 euros) and multiplied by the factor 26.4. For survivors with younger children, this allowance increases to around 1500 euros for two children.
Widow's and orphan's pensions aim to secure the livelihood of survivors, particularly those with low income. However, if one's own net income or net pension exceeds the tax-free allowance, 15% is deducted from the widow's pension. The taxable portion of the pension depends on the year of retirement, increasing annually from 50% in 2005 to 100% by 2040.
To determine net income, all types of income are considered, including wages, salaries, benefits-in-kind, and one-time payments like bonuses. Taxes, social security contributions, and pension-related expenses are then deducted.
