Germany Approves 606 CDM and 28 JI Projects in Emission Reduction Push
Germany has shown significant progress in its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By June 2023, the country has approved 606 Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects and 28 Joint Implementation (JI) projects. The German Emissions Trading Authority (DEHSt) oversees these initiatives and their administrative tasks.
The Paris Agreement's Article 6 outlines three methods for an international carbon market post-2020. Germany's approved projects align with these approaches. The CDM allows Annex I countries to fund climate projects in developing nations, with 8,205 such projects registered globally as of June 16, 2023, resulting in 2.281 billion metric tons of CO2 equivalent reductions. JI, on the other hand, enables Annex I countries to count emissions reductions in another Annex I country towards their own targets.
The 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26) adopted implementation rules for these new approaches in November 2021. However, no specific information was found regarding German CDM projects approved at COP26 for transition into the Paris Agreement's new system.
Germany's approval of 606 CDM and 28 JI projects demonstrates its commitment to reducing emissions and contributing to global climate efforts. The DEHSt continues to manage these projects and their administrative processes. While the CDM ended in the European emissions trading system in 2020, existing projects can still have their emissions reductions certified until the end of that year.
