Deutsche Bahn: A Child-Friendly Train Ride, Despite End of Family Reservations

German Railways (Deutsche Bahn) assertions on family seating arrangements: No federal government involvement in arrangements.

Hop on board the Deutsche Bahn, a state-owned German train service, for a friendly, kid-friendly experience. But, buckle up, as family reservations are bidding adieu on long-distance trains - a business decision that raises eyebrows.

The Federal Ministry of Transport, being the group's owner, sees this shift primarily as an internal business matter. Yet, it's worth questioning if this decision sends the right signals at present. The Bahn has the autonomy to shape its own fare policies.

From this Sunday, families can no longer reserve endless seats at a flat rate for their brood. Instead, passengers, including kids, will need to pay for each reservation. The seat reservation prices in second class will rise by 30 cents to 5.50 euros, and in first class, it'll cost 6.90 euros, up from 6.50 euros.

Criticism has rolled in from coalition factions such as Union and SPD. Despite the protests, the Bahn is sticking to its plans following the announcement. The ministry spokesperson highlights that, amid the chaos, it's crucial to remember that Bahn remains a delightful mode of transport for children, as all kids under 14 can travel free regardless.
