German Drivers: Mandatory License Swap by 2033, 2025 for Elderly
German drivers holding licenses issued before 2013 must swap them for new ones by 2033. Those born in 1971 or earlier, holding paper licenses, must upgrade to a carrd format by 2025. The process is nationwide, simple, and can be done by mail.
The exchange is mandatory for all licenses issued before January 19, 2013, with the new one valid for 15 years. For those born in 1971 or earlier, the swap is required by January 19, 2025. No personal appearance is needed; it can be done by post.
Required documents include a copy of an ID or passport, a biometric passport photo, and the current driver's license. The conversion costs up to 30.30 euros, including registered mail. If the old license wasn't issued in Aschaffenburg, a card file transcript from the issuing authority is needed. Medical examinations are not required, except for truck or bus license extensions.
Drivers affected by these changes should plan ahead to avoid any disruption in their driving privileges. The exchange process is designed to be straightforward, with no need for a visit to the driver's license office for most cases.
