German Drivers: Last Chance to Exchange Paper Licenses by 2034
German drivers holding paper licenses issued between 2002 and 2003 have until 18 January 2034 to exchange them. The process is done in stages, with different deadlines based on birth years or license issuance dates. Online appointments are recommended to avoid delays.
The exchange applies to EU card licenses issued between 1999 and 2013 without an expiration date. Those yet to exchange their licenses are urged to do so promptly. All paper licenses, including pink, grey, and DDR types, must be replaced by 2033. Birth cohorts from 1953 to 1980 had until 19 January 2023 to exchange their licenses. By 2026, all card licenses issued from 1999 to 2001 must be exchanged.
Driver's license offices are open from Monday to Tuesday, 7:30 to 12:30 and 13:00 to 15:30, on Thursday from 7:30 to 12:45 and 13:30 to 18:00, and on Friday from 7:30 to 12:00. Appointments can be made online in advance at www.our website/driver's license exchange.
Failure to exchange licenses by the given deadlines may result in driving restrictions. Drivers are advised to stay informed about their specific exchange deadline and plan accordingly.
