Gender Pay Gap Persists in Germany, Even in Highest-Paid Professions

A recent analysis of German salaries based on kununu data reveals a stark gender pay gap, even in the highest-paid professions. While women in Germany earn the most in roles like senior medical doctors and patent lawyers, they face significant disparities compared to their male counterparts. This article explores the salary landscape for women in Germany, highlighting both the best-paid jobs and those with the lowest earnings.

At the pinnacle of earnings for women in Germany are senior medical doctors, who take home an average of €136,000 annually. Other high-paying roles include radiologists (€121,750), patent lawyers (€106,500), and senior legal counsel (€105,000). These professions demand high specialization and responsibility. However, women in certain sectors face lower income opportunities, such as in trade, hospitality, and specific craft or artistic apprenticeships, with monthly earnings often below €1,200.

Traditional female professions like office clerks and kindergarten teachers have average salaries, earning 34,600 € and 40,300 € per year, respectively. Meanwhile, apprenticeships in high-demand fields like air traffic controller and software developer can be lucrative, with average gross salaries of 82,200 € and 60,200 € per year.

Female auditors top the list of highest-paid professions, earning an average gross salary of 82,100 € per year. Doctors and medical advisors follow closely, with average gross salaries of 80,400 € and 82,000 € per year, respectively. Graduates in fields like medicine, computer science, business administration, and law can expect higher salaries, with doctors earning an average of 87,600 € per year and medical advisors earning 85,400 € per year.

The gender pay gap is evident even in these high-earning professions. For instance, male doctors earn an average of 92,500 € per year, compared to 87,600 € for their female counterparts. Similarly, male medical advisors earn an average of 90,200 € per year, compared to 85,400 € for women.

The salary landscape for women in Germany reveals both opportunities for high earnings and significant disparities compared to men. While women excel in high-paying professions, the gender pay gap persists, even at the highest levels. Addressing this gap requires further investigation and targeted policies to ensure equal pay for work of equal value.
