Gameskraft Shuts Down Poker Platform, Restructures Amidst Regulatory Storm
Gameskraft, a leading Indian gaming startup, has announced significant changes due to recent regulatory challenges. The company, known for platforms like RummyCulture and LudoCulture, has shut down its online poker platform Pocket52 and is restructuring its business model following a ban on real-money games. This comes amidst a broader crisis in India's online gaming sector, with thousands of jobs at stake.
Gameskraft's troubles began with a ₹21,000 crore tax demand and high taxes, leading to the shutdown of Pocket52. Founded in 2017, the company had built a strong portfolio with popular platforms like RummyCulture and LudoCulture. However, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, which banned real-money games, has forced Gameskraft to reassess its business model.
The impact of the new gaming act is far-reaching. Gameskraft has laid off 120 employees, joining other high-profile startups like Games24x7, Mobile Premier League (MPL), Zupee, and PokerBaazi in announcing job cuts. Even giants like Dream11 and WinZO are pivoting their business models to adapt to the changing regulatory environment. The uncertainty has affected thousands of jobs and billions in investments in India's gaming economy.
In addition to these external challenges, Gameskraft has also dealt with an internal financial scandal. The company's former group CFO is alleged to have diverted ₹250 crore. Despite these setbacks, Gameskraft has committed to supporting laid-off employees with health insurance, wellness services, and outplacement assistance.
Gameskraft's struggles reflect the broader crisis in India's online gaming sector. The future of the industry remains uncertain as it grapples with regulatory changes and financial challenges. Despite the difficulties, Gameskraft is committed to supporting its employees through this transition.
