FTSE 100 Hits New Record High, Up 15% in 2022
The FTSE 100 has hit a new record high, closing at 9491.25, up 0.7% or 63.52 points. This marks a significant milestone for the index, which represents the 100 largest and most liquid companies listed on the London Stock Exchange, including major British firms like 3i Group, Diageo, and HSBC Holdings.
The FTSE 100 has surged nearly 15% this year, with investors remaining undeterred by the ongoing US government shutdown. Despite the absence of the US non-farms payroll report, which was not published due to the shutdown, the momentum in London continued unabated. Neil Wilson, UK strategist at Saxo, predicts the FTSE 100 could reach 10,000 by the end of the year.
Meanwhile, the FTSE 250 also rose 0.7% and is up 7.6% this year. However, it remains around 8% below its 2021 peak, indicating there's still room for growth.
The FTSE 100's record high is a testament to the resilience and growth of the UK's largest companies. As the year progresses, investors will be watching closely to see if the index can reach the predicted 10,000 points by the end of 2022.
