The Fountainhead, a remarkable architectural masterpiece designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1948, has recently been listed for sale with Crescent Sotheby's International Realty. Known as the J. Willis Hughes House, this significant work of modernist design is situated in the Fondren neighbourhood of Jackson, Mississippi.

Built between 1950 and 1954 for oil speculator J. Willis Hughes, The Fountainhead stands as a testament to Wright's Usonian ideals, emphasising simplicity, functionality, and integration with nature. The house was commissioned during a period when Wright was engaged in major projects, such as the Guggenheim Museum, and was receiving significant late-career honours.

The Fountainhead is one of about 60 Usonian homes Wright designed, part of his vision to create affordable yet beautifully designed American homes free from European influences. It is the only one of four Frank Lloyd Wright designs in Mississippi to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, receiving this distinction in 1980.

The name "Fountainhead" references both a physical pool with a fountain outside the bedroom wing and the idea of a source of creative inspiration, possibly nodding to Ayn Rand's 1943 novel about an architect. The house's form is a parallelogram, a response to the site’s unusual topography that shaped dimensions, wall placement, and door sizes, reflecting Wright’s approach of designing specifically for the land.

Uniquely, The Fountainhead was built without stud walls, sheetrock, brick, tile, or paint; instead, the walls and ceilings are composed of exquisite Heart Tidewater Red Cypress, contributing to a warm natural interior ambiance. Floor-to-ceiling windows open the interior space visually and physically to the surrounding landscape, reinforcing the idea of oneness with nature. Inside, built-in furniture and storage maintain uncluttered, functional spaces, aligning with the Usonian goal of affordable efficiency and aesthetic clarity.

The Fountainhead stands as a cultural landmark in Mississippi, symbolising Wright’s architectural ideals and his late-career contributions to residential design. After Hughes sold the property in 1980, architect Robert Parker Adams restored it and recently brought it back to the market, illustrating ongoing preservation efforts.

The Fountainhead presents a unique opportunity to own an icon of modernist design, covering approximately 330.55 square meters (3,558 square feet) on a nearly one-acre site. With an asking price of $2.5 million, this architectural gem offers a chance to become a steward of a significant piece of American architectural history.

With its strategic location on the market by Crescent Sotheby's International Realty, potential investors now have the chance to invest in a piece of American architectural history, The Fountainhead. Originally commissioned by oil speculator J. Willis Hughes, this Usonian home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1950-1954 is a testament to the integration of nature, functionality, and real-estate design.
