France Launches World's First Project-Financed Floating Wind Farm
France has launched its first floating wind farm, Provence Grand Large, with a capacity of 25 MW. The project, fully commissioned in June 2025, is a global first to be project-financed. It began delivering clean energy to the grid in November 2024.
The farm features three Siemens Gamesa 8 MW turbines installed on tensioned line floats. These floating foundations were constructed by Eiffage Métal and assembled in collaboration with Smulders. The project is expected to generate enough electricity to power 45,000 inhabitants annually. Elicio and Baywa r.e. are the companies that financed this pioneering project.
The Provence Grand Large floating wind farm, inaugurated in 2024, marks a significant milestone in France's renewable energy journey. It is the first of its kind to be project-financed globally and is set to provide clean power to thousands of households.
