Convicted Former VW Managers Get Jailed Over Emissions Scandal Verdict - Former VW managers face prison sentences in diesel emissions scandal

Four ex-Volkswagen managers have been found guilty of fraud in the diesel emissions scandal, with two receiving prison terms and two suspended sentences, according to the Braunschweig district court's economic crimes chamber. The verdict signals the conclusion of a four-year proceeding over emissions manipulations.

While investigators view the defendants as guilty, they maintain their innocence and perceive themselves as scapegoats. The prosecution requested prison terms ranging from two to four years, considering probation suitable in only one case, while the defense advocated for three acquittals and a reprimand.

This verdict does not mark the end of the legal process, as four more trials against 31 defendants are still pending in Braunschweig, according to a spokesperson from the district court.

The diesel manipulation scandal first emerged in September 2015, with Volkswagen admitting to false test results in the U.S. shortly after. As a result, CEO Martin Winterkorn stepped down, leading the company into one of its greatest crises, costing around €33 billion, according to Volkswagen's estimates.

Initially, Winterkorn was slated to stand trial alongside the accused. However, thanks to health concerns, his case was separated from the main trial before it began in September 2021. Despite serving as both a witness and defendant, Winterkorn has consistently denied responsibility for the dieselgate scandal.

An accident and subsequent hospital stay halted the trial against the most prominent defendant, leaving the proceedings against Winterkorn indefinitely postponed, with his fate uncertain. Meanwhile, the latest court activity has focused on other former Volkswagen executives. A recent conviction saw four ex-managers receive prison sentences and suspended sentences. Winterkorn's case remains distinct and on hold.
