Finns propose to deliver heat via LNG terminal - Finnish entities to utilize waste heat for liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal operation
The Finnish company Outokumpu and German Regas, operator of the LNG terminal in Mukran, have partnered to enhance the environmental profile of the facility. This collaboration aims to supply biocarbon-derived process heat and excess green electricity to operate the LNG terminal, as announced last week.
According to Ingo Wagner, managing director of German Regas, this move will enable a significant reduction in energy requirements for the terminal, which has traditionally relied on fossil fuels. Through this arrangement, the terminal's environmental footprint is set to diminish substantially.
Outokumpu, currently planning to establish a biocarbon plant in Mukran by 2026, will generate power from waste wood using pyrolysis. This process involves high-temperature decomposition of the biomass, resulting in biocarbon. This biocarbon will be exported to Finland, where it will be transformed into biochar pellets for stainless steel production, replacing conventional coal.
Stefan Erdmann, Outokumpu's technical director, stated that the partnership with German Regas would add value to the biochar plant, further confirming the company's decision to establish operations at the Mukran Port. Initial investments are estimated to surpass €40 million.
Both parties believe that this initiative aligns with larger efforts to diminish greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector. The utilization of renewable energy sources and local by-products within the vicinity of the plant serve to optimize operational costs and promote a more sustainable approach to energy consumption at the LNG terminal.
- The Finnish company Outokumpu's employment policy, currently focusing on the establishment of a biocarbon plant, will create jobs for locals in Mukran by 2026.
- The Community policy of the LNG terminal in Mukran, in partnership with Outokumpu, is expanding to include investments in renewable-energy industries, such as biocarbon production.
- The Employment policy of German Regas, operator of the LNG terminal in Mukran, is evolving to include opportunities in the financing sector, as they invest in renewable energy sources like biocarbon for energy production.
