Final Section of B178 Expressway Opens in Saxony
Construction of Federal Highway 178, which began in the southeast of Saxony over two decades ago, is drawing to a close with the inauguration of the penultimate section this Sunday. This section will connect Zittau directly to the A4 motorway at Weißenberg, marking an important milestone.
During the citizen's festival on Sunday, residents will have the opportunity to test the newly completed six-kilometer stretch between Oderwitz and Oberseifersdorf on bicycles or inline skates. Regular traffic will resume on the newly opened section from Monday.
The Saxony Ministry of Infrastructure estimated the costs for the penultimate section at around 57 million euros. A total of 242 million euros has been invested in the new construction of the eastern German federal highway since its inception.
The final section for B178 within Zittau remains under planning, with costs estimated at around 120 million euros. The planning procedure for this stretch and its connection to the A4 is currently underway.
Zittau's mayor, Thomas Zenker (independent), described the construction of B178 as a "century project," emphasizing its importance for economic development and daily commuters. He expressed hope that the Free State would expedite the legal process and the completion of the missing northern section.
