In the picturesque city of Filderstadt, Germany, a summer festival is set to celebrate the local creative scene, but off the festival grounds, the city is grappling with a financial challenge.

The city's tax revenues are experiencing a downturn, with the intake for property tax A expected to fall significantly below the planned target, forecasting a shortfall of 25 to 30 percent. This trend is also evident in property tax B, where the intake is more than 86,000 euros below the planned target. The property tax has seen significant shortfalls in revenue, and the prosperous years for the business tax rate since 1997 seem to be over, with this year's intake being approximately 4.3 million euros below the planned target.

No improvement is expected in the medium term for the business tax intake. Georg Braunmueller, the city treasurer, acknowledges much uncertainty about the property tax and mentions a potential wave of objections for property tax B. He also reveals that the city administration is planning to increase the business tax.

The final decision on the tax rate adjustments lies with the council, who will be presented with proposals for tax rate adjustments for both property and business tax by the summer, with effects from 2026. Citizens and businesses face the threat of tax increases to maintain and fund set standards and achieve a balanced budget.

Meanwhile, in neighbouring Ludwigsburg, another financial crisis looms, with a deficit of over 15 million euros.

In a brighter note, the registration deadline for the 52nd Hoefleswetz tournament is fast approaching on September 16th. This tournament offers fun and prizes for young footballers, providing a much-needed distraction from the city's financial woes.

With the council set to make crucial decisions regarding tax rates, residents and businesses in Filderstadt are advised to stay informed by checking official municipal communications, local news outlets, or financial reports directly from the city government. The introduction of the property tax C is not under discussion in Filderstadt, according to Braunmueller.

The study published in "The Lancet Planetary Health" shows that food in hospitals and nursing homes can be harmful to health and the environment, a concern that may take a back seat in the face of Filderstadt's immediate financial challenges.

The city of Filderstadt is facing a financial challenge, with significant shortfalls in property tax revenue and the business tax rate experiencing a downturn. The city administration is planning to increase the business tax, and concerned residents and businesses are advised to stay informed about the upcoming tax rate adjustments.
