Federal Government Backs 30-Year Plan: A$10M for Greek Cultural Village in Melbourne
The federal government has pledged A$10 million for a project that has been in talks for nearly three decades. CHORA, led by architect Billy Kavallaris, aims to restore a 19th-century convent and create a modern Greek village in Melbourne.
The project, formally lodged under Victoria's Development Facilitation Program, seeks to transform the Holy Monastery of Axion Estin into a Greek cultural precinct. The plan includes an amphitheatre, art studios, apartments, a hotel, event spaces, and a central church. Construction is expected to begin in 2026 or 2027, once planning approval is secured.
Billy Kavallaris, through his firm Kavallaris Urban Design, is leading the project. Commissioned by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, he aims to restore the historic monastery and create a vibrant cultural hub.
With A$10 million in federal funding, CHORA is set to transform the Holy Monastery of Axion Estin into a modern Greek village. The project, expected to begin in 2026 or 2027, will offer various facilities and contribute to Melbourne's cultural landscape.
