Extensive Traffic Congestion: Accumulated 203.830 kilometres of Traffic Delays Over Summer Vacation, According to ADAC
In the summer of 2024, German highways faced a significant increase in traffic jams compared to the previous year. The ADAC, a well-known automobile association in Germany, reported a total of 119,246 traffic jams during the 12 weeks of summer vacation.
The A99, a traffic hotspot in Germany, was particularly affected. The Munich bypass on the A99 was the worst traffic route, with 3,024 traffic jams per 100 kilometers of highway. This was followed by the A8 and A3 highways, which had congestion rates of 1,473 and 1,245 traffic jams per 100 kilometers, respectively.
The worst weekend for travel in 2024 was August 1-3, with a total of 4,201 traffic jams, 9,498 kilometers in length, and a duration of 4,721 hours. The longest individual traffic jam during this period occurred on the A24 from Schwerin to the Berliner Ring, lasting around ten hours and reaching a maximum length of 35 kilometers.
Interestingly, Fridays usually had almost twice as many traffic jams as Saturdays and Sundays in 2024. On average, Saturdays were the most congested days of the weekends.
Comparing the figures to the previous year, the total length of traffic jams in 2024 was slightly less than in 2022. However, the number of traffic jams was higher, at 119,246 compared to 116,020 in 2022. The total time lost due to traffic jams in 2022 was 119,233 hours, an increase of 7.6 percent compared to 2021. Unfortunately, no specific information about the total time lost due to traffic jams in 2024 is provided.
In 2023, the number of traffic jams during the same period was 122,686, indicating a slight decrease in traffic congestion compared to 2024. However, the exact figures for the total length and time lost due to traffic jams in 2023 are not available.
As we move forward, it is crucial for authorities to address these traffic issues and find solutions to improve the driving experience for millions of commuters during the summer vacation.
