European Stocks Mixed: FTSE-25 Up, Mid-Caps Down; Greek, Cypriot Indices Edge Up
Stock markets in Europe witnessed varied performance on Thursday, with the FTSE-25 index in London closing slightly higher while mid-caps declined. In Greece, the ATHEX general index ended the day marginally up, but Greek stocks' early gains had mostly faded by the close. Meanwhile, the Cyprus Stock Exchange's general index edged up 0.09%.
The large-cap FTSE-25 index in London expanded by 0.08% to end at 5,200.46 points. However, mid-caps contracted by 0.96%, indicating a divergence in performance between large and mid-cap stocks. In Athens, the ATHEX general index closed at 2,057.26 points, up 0.04%. Turnover amounted to 193.3 million euros, a decrease from Wednesday's €219.2 million. Banks index earned 0.09%, with notable gains from Optima (+2.38%) and Eurobank (+1.43%). Titan Cement collected 3.91% and Viohalco rose 3.36%. In Nicosia, the general index of the Cyprus Stock Exchange increased by 0.09% to 287.31 points. Coca-Cola HBC, however, conceded 2.16%. Among the day's trades, 53 stocks reported gains, 54 sustained losses, and 19 remained unchanged.
Thursday's trading session saw varied fortunes across European stock markets. While London's FTSE-25 index and Athens' ATHEX general index ended slightly higher, mid-caps in London and Greek stocks overall experienced losses. The Cyprus Stock Exchange's general index also closed marginally up. Notable individual stock performances included gains for Optima and Eurobank in Athens, and a loss for Coca-Cola HBC in Nicosia.
