EU Warns Spain Over Methane Regulation Non-Compliance

The European Commission has issued a formal warning to Spain for failing to comply with the EU's methane regulation. Spain, along with eight other member states, has missed the deadline to notify the Commission of their competent authorities for supervision and enforcement of the regulation.

The regulation, aimed at reducing emissions in the crude oil, natural gas, and coal sectors and increasing transparency, requires member states to designate a competent authority by February 5, 2025. However, Spain has not yet notified the EU of the authority responsible for methane regulation compliance. As a result, no authority has been designated or notified to take over the monitoring and verification of methane regulations in Spain.

The Commission has given the nine non-compliant countries, including Bulgaria, Estonia, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Austria, Slovakia, and Finland, a two-month deadline to respond and correct their 'deficiencies'. If the response is not satisfactory, the Commission may proceed to the next phase of infringement procedures, including a reasoned opinion and referral to the European Court of Justice.

Spain, along with other member states, has been warned for not complying with the EU's methane regulation. The Commission has given them two months to respond and correct their non-compliance. Failure to do so may result in further infringement procedures.
