EU grants leeway to member states in boosting motorhome maximum weights
A New Era for EU Drivers 🚗🇪🇺
In an exciting shift for motorists across Europe, category B drivers could soon have the freedom to maneuver larger vehicles! The European Parliament and Council have agreed to extend the license limit, potentially allowing drivers to steer vehicles weighing up to a whopping 4250kg, contrasting the current restriction of 3500kg.
Countries will have four years to fully ratify this change, and once implemented, drivers who have held a category B license for at least two years could start driving the heavier vehicles, with a catch—they must be “alternatively fueled” 🔋. Keep an eye out for further updates from your member states on what qualifies as an "alternatively fueled" vehicle.
For now, those who wish to drive vehicles relying on fossil fuels will still have to undergo "targeted training or testing", but the specifics will be left up to individual member states to decide.
As for our beloved friends across the channel, the UK isn't required to follow suit in the changing rules for motorhome licenses, but the NCC (which has championed for the adjustment) is rallying for the Government to make an early decision, according to Simon McGrath, Director of Communications and External Relations at the NCC.
