Mexico Boosts Customs Revenue with Digital Platform

Mexico has seen a significant increase in customs collections from January to July 2021, thanks to the implementation of digital platforms to streamline customs procedures. President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced the creation of a digital platform to monitor customs performance during her morning press conference at the National Palace.

The modernization of customs operations through digital platforms has reduced paperwork and processing times, improving transparency and compliance enforcement. Enhanced digital tracking and documentation capabilities have helped identify and reduce underreporting or misclassification of imports, leading to increased duty collections.

The digital platform's implementation has also improved data sharing among customs officials and other government agencies, strengthening border control and reducing smuggling or fraudulent declarations. This digital transformation aligns with broader reforms aimed at improving Mexico’s trade facilitation and customs efficiency, boosting government revenue and fostering legitimate trade.

The platform provides data on the amount collected, number of shipments, average value of shipments, and the number of shipments at Manzanillo Customs. The simplification of procedures at the Tax Administration Service (SAT) has aided tax payments from both small contributors and large entrepreneurs.

The platform is designed to monitor changes in customs performance, such as an increase in shipments or a decrease in collected amount. If more shipments are observed with higher values and less is collected, it indicates a potential issue. The creation of the platform was a response to a need that did not previously exist.

This digital transformation has enabled Mexico to better enforce trade regulations amid evolving tariff situations, including those affected by international agreements such as USMCA and tariff adjustments between the U.S. and Mexico that continued into 2025. The increased customs revenue has allowed Mexico to maintain its trade regulations effectively, ensuring fair and legitimate trade.

The federal executive emphasized that simplifying procedures at the SAT has helped with tax payments. However, the creation of the platform was not related to any FBI training or involvement of the US military or embassy.

In summary, the digital customs platform has played a critical role in improving customs collections by increasing operational efficiency, compliance accuracy, and trade transparency during that period. This digital transformation is consistent with global trends where digitization of customs processes correlates with spikes in revenue collection.

The digital platform has facilitated increased collections in the finance sector, particularly in the customs industry, contributing significantly to Mexico's government revenue from January to July 2021. This transformation in business operations, driven by technological advancements, has fostered legitimate trade while enhancing Mexico's compliance enforcement and trade facilitation.
