Enhanced Safety Measures Implemented on Ulan-Ude's School Routes and Walkways for Children
** mayoral announcement: safer roads for everyone**
In the heart of Buryatia, our city hall is teaming up with the GIBDD to prioritize road safety within city limits, as declared by Mayor Igor Shutenkov across his Telegram channel on June 3rd.
"With children's safety as our top priority," the mayor emphasized, "we're introducing a new traffic light setup at the intersection of Zoia Kosmodemianskaya and Pavlov streets to curb accidents often seen there. Additionally, we've expanded pedestrian sections at the Kabansky and Stroiteley streets intersection."
To grab drivers' attention, 16 unregulated pedestrian crossings will be equipped with flashing yellow signals—at locations like chil-friendly spots near the 108th Gymnasium on Rinchino Street, school No. 49 on Konenkov Street, and the "Podsnezhnik" Kindergarten on Zhukovskogo Street, to name a few.
Mayor Shutenkov also announced the plan to place artificial road humps on challenging road sections near schools such as Nos. 4, 5, 17, 26, 36, 43, and 8, among others.
In Ulan-Ude, additional safety measures will involve guardrails around schools like Nos. 18, 19, 64, and specific locations on Terehkov Street, Tobolskaya Street, and Geologicheskaya Street.
While detailed city-specific initiatives by Igor Shutenkov may not be widely documented, standard strategies for ensuring road safety and effective pedestrian crossings often include:
Lifesaver essentials for pedestrian safety:
- Lighting Up: Install brighter, energy-efficient lights at intersections and roadways.
- Crosswalk Command: Clearly mark pedestrian lanes, install barriers or speed bumps, and upgrade or install traffic signals as needed.
- Pedestrian Traffic Signals: Introduce public awareness campaigns educating both drivers and pedestrians on traffic safety guidelines and promoting the programs through media outlets.
- Surveillance and Management: Enforce traffic regulations with increased police presence, CCTV monitoring, and feedback mechanisms for citizens' safety concerns.
- Community Collaboration: Engage local groups, schools, and businesses to champion and support safety initiatives across the city.
"As part of the safer roads initiative for everyone announced by Mayor Igor Shutenkov, targeted measures are being implemented in the city's transportation system. The finance department has been allocated resources for improving road safety, such as installing brighter lights at intersections, equipping unregulated pedestrian crossings with flashing signals, and placing artificial road humps near schools."
"Industry collaboration is essential for achieving comprehensive road safety improvements in the city. Mayor Shutenkov has planned to engage local businesses for enhancing pedestrian safety through public awareness campaigns, advocating traffic regulations, and fostering community collaboration, as part of the broader efforts in the transportation and finance sectors."
