The journey to achieve this remarkable range began with a conversation among engineers in late 2024. The goal was to push the boundaries of EV efficiency, and the Silverado EV Work Truck was the chosen vehicle for the challenge.

The key optimizations made by General Motors (GM) to achieve this 1,059.2-mile range were primarily minor, driver-focused, and aerodynamic adjustments. These modifications included lowering the windshield wiper blade position to reduce aerodynamic drag, inflating tires to their highest acceptable pressure to minimize rolling resistance, removing the spare tire to reduce weight, optimizing the wheel alignment for better efficiency, adding a tonneau cover over the truck bed to improve airflow, turning off climate control to conserve battery power, and conducting the test in summer to take advantage of optimum ambient temperature for battery efficiency.

The test involved very conservative driving techniques, such as maintaining an average speed of 20-25 mph, minimizing hard braking and acceleration, and employing a team of 40 drivers rotating hour-long shifts over seven days to ensure steady, efficient driving.

These modifications were all within the truck's owner's manual guidelines, and the core hardware and software of the truck were left completely unchanged from production specifications. The Silverado Max Range Work Truck, with an EPA-estimated range of 493 miles, serves as a testament to GM's focus on improving EV range.

Jon Doremus, GM's propulsion calibration engineering manager, stated that the test involved driving on public roads with real conditions. The test route for the Silverado EV Work Truck included public roads near GM's Milford Proving Ground and ended on Detroit's Belle Isle.

Kurt Kelty, GM's vice president of battery, propulsion, and sustainability, emphasized that the achievement was not just for bragging rights, but to learn and build better vehicles for everyone.
