In the heart of Berlin, a series of ambitious construction projects are reshaping the city's skyline, with a focus on sustainability and innovation.

One of the most notable developments is the construction of Germany's tallest wooden building, a 98-meter high structure being built by UTB in Kreuzberg. Known as the EDGE East Side, this high-rise project will serve as the future high point of the new Mercedes Benz Quarter. The building, designed by the architects of the Bjarke Ingels Group, is scheduled to be completed in two years, by 2023. With more than 80,000 square meters of gross floor area, it will primarily be used by the US company Amazon, which will occupy 28 of the later 35 floors. EDGE Technologies, the company behind the project, emphasizes the sustainability of the EDGE East Side, using circular economy products and materials free of volatile organic compounds.

Amazon, the current market leader in Berlin's online retail, already employs over 2,800 employees in the Berlin-Brandenburg region. The tech giant will also be the anchor tenant in another significant project, the office building near the Ostbahnhof, a former converted Karstadt property.

Nearby, the EDGE East Side is one of several high-rise projects being constructed near the East Side Gallery. Another notable project is the Grasblau, an office building being constructed along the Landwehr Canal in Kreuzberg.

The Mercedes Benz Quarter is not the only historic railway site undergoing transformation. A new business campus will be constructed on the historic railway site at the Postbahnhof in the coming years.

The controversial implementation of these projects has not gone unnoticed, with massive protests in the district. The building of the EDGE East Side, for example, has been a point of contention in Kreuzberg. The building will be located between the train stations Warschauer Straße and Ostbahnhof, directly on the Warschauer Bridge.

Two more high-rises are being constructed on the western side of the site, near the Ostbahnhof. The residential project 'Max & Moritz' is being developed according to plans by the Berlin architectural firm Nofer Architects.

Meanwhile, Zalando, another major player in Berlin's online retail, occupies several buildings on the site of the Mercedes Benz Quarter and will soon occupy another, the 'Stream Berlin'.

Finally, a 150-meter residential tower is being constructed at Alexanderplatz, adding to the city's ever-evolving skyline. The construction of these projects, while controversial, represents a significant step in Berlin's continued growth and development.
