In a significant move that could reshape the logistics landscape in the region, DHL Express Holding has announced its decision to relocate its headquarters to Schkeuditz, a city located near Leipzig. This strategic shift positions Schkeuditz as one of the key logistics hubs in Saxony, with a trade tax rate already among the lowest in the region.

Schkeuditz and Leipzig Airport are already important hubs for DHL, with the company processing hundreds of thousands of shipments every night at the airport. The move of DHL's headquarters to Schkeuditz signals that Leipzig Airport remains a strategically important hub, further strengthening its position as Germany's largest air cargo hub.

Markus Otto, Senior Vice President of DHL Aviation Europe, stated that the move of the holding company to Schkeuditz is a logical step. The management department of the DHL holding company is already predominantly active in Schkeuditz, making the relocation a natural progression.

The relocation is expected to have positive economic impacts, such as increased employment opportunities, infrastructure development, and reinforcement of Leipzig/Halle Airport’s role as a key logistics hub. The presence of other logistics operators like DP World Logistics in Leipzig, handling millions of containers daily, indicates a growing logistics ecosystem that DHL’s headquarters relocation would further amplify.

From a broader perspective, airport-adjacent headquarters relocations by global companies often contribute to improved infrastructure utilization, higher demand for regional services, and increased attractiveness for further business investments.

While specific projected figures or official assessments are not yet available, it is expected that Schkeuditz will see a significant increase in trade tax revenue. Estimates suggest that the revenue could rise from 25 million euros in 2022 to around 119.4 million euros in 2023.

In comparison, the trade tax rate in Bonn is 537 percent, making Schkeuditz's 300 percent rate one of the lowest in Saxony. This competitive tax rate is likely to attract more companies to Schkeuditz, further boosting the local economy.

The relocation of DHL's headquarters to Schkeuditz is a testament to the city's growing importance in the logistics sector and underscores its strategic location near Leipzig Airport. As DHL further strengthens its location in Leipzig, the decision could have significant, far-reaching implications for Leipzig Airport and the local economy.

The strategic relocation of DHL's headquarters to Schkeuditz could attract more businesses in the finance, industry, and business sectors due to its competitive trade tax rate, further boosting the local economy. With Schkeuditz and Leipzig Airport already serving as crucial hubs for DHL, this move could cement Leipzig/Halle Airport’s role as a key logistics hub, thereby influencing the broader finance, industry, and business landscape in the region.
