Düsseldorf Residents Protest Growing Number of Empty Apartments

In Düsseldorf, residents and activists are raising concerns about a growing number of empty apartments and the role of profit-driven investors. Protests have erupted, with demands for action from the city administration.

At least 17 multifamily houses for rent in Golzheim have been bought by investors, with profit maximization as their primary goal. These investors often use termination notices, claiming the need for renovation, to move tenants out and raise rents. Many apartments in Düsseldorf have been empty for years following such tactics.

Protesters, including a network of affected tenants and the alliance for affordable housing, have occupied an empty apartment in Bankstraße 11 to highlight the issue. They demand answers from the mayor and administration regarding conscious vacancy of housing and the application of existing laws to prevent vacancies and protect tenants. An employee of an investor compared the approach to real estate acquisition to the game Monopoly, emphasizing the strategic nature of these business investments.

Termination notices and conscious vacancy of apartments are pressing issues in Düsseldorf, with investors buying at least 17 multifamily houses in recent years solely for profit maximization. Protesters urge the city to address these concerns and protect tenants' rights.
