Drone assault on Sochi oil storage facility leads to massive inferno, as reported by Russian authorities
In the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the past few months have seen a significant increase in the use of drones and missiles by both sides.
Last weekend, the Ukrainian air force intercepted 60 Russian drones and one missile, but 16 drones and six missiles still managed to hit targets across eight locations. Ukrainian authorities claimed they targeted key sites in Russia's energy and defense sectors in retaliation for Moscow's strikes on Ukrainian cities.
The city of Mykolaiv in Ukraine bore the brunt of these attacks, with Russian missile strikes destroying homes and civilian infrastructure. At least seven people were injured in Mykolaiv following a strike on a residential area.
Meanwhile, in Russia, the Russian civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, temporarily halted flights at Sochi's airport due to the attacks. However, no direct and recent information explicitly states attacks on Sochi by Ukrainian drones.
The intensification of drone attacks on Ukrainian cities such as Mykolaiv began in July 2025. Russian drones targeted various locations, including recruitment centers in Kharkiv, causing civilian casualties and injuries. Other cities like Zaporizhia, Kremenchuk, Poltava, and Kryvyi Rih were also targeted.
Earlier in 2025, Ukrainian drone strikes targeted industrial and military infrastructure inside Russia. On 14 January, Ukrainian drones attacked the Kazan Orgsintez chemical plant near Kazan, causing explosions and fires in LNG storage tanks. A nearby fuel storage supplying Engels air base was also hit.
As the conflict continues, diplomatic efforts are also underway. US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is heading to Russia to push for a ceasefire in the war with Ukraine. Trump has threatened new economic sanctions if progress is not made in the peace efforts.
The fighting has escalated, with Moscow amping up pressure amid the breakdown in peace talks and a seeming fallout between Trump and Putin. The deadliest week in Ukraine in recent months resulted in the deaths of at least 33 people, including five children, in Kherson and Kyiv.
In Sochi, the mayor emphasized that the city's infrastructure is functioning normally, and efforts are being made to clean up debris and help affected individuals. Over 120 firefighters attempted to extinguish the blaze caused by debris from a downed drone striking a fuel tank in Sochi.
As the conflict continues, both sides seem determined to assert their control, leading to further destruction and loss of life. The international community continues to watch closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution to this ongoing conflict.
