In a surprising turn of events, the French aviation sector is facing disruption due to a workers' strike, primarily affecting Air France employees. The strike, called by the Force Ouvrière union to protest government austerity measures, was initially scheduled for Thursday, September 18, 2025. However, a key union, the SNCTA, has postponed its planned strike, moving it to October, thus avoiding a total blockade in French skies.

The striking workers' action has caused "very severe disruption" to traffic starting tonight on Intercité and TER trains, according to the French national railway company, SNCF. Only one in two Intercité trains and three in five TER trains will run, resulting in significant delays and cancellations. The TGV network, however, is expected to operate almost as usual, with 90 percent of trains running as scheduled.

The Léman Express, which connects Geneva and parts of Vaud with neighboring French communities, is likely to be affected, especially on sections operated by the French railway company. Updates on the situation can be found here. Delays and cancellations are expected on the Léman Express.

In a positive development, the Swiss Geneva public transport company, TPG, has stated that, as of Wednesday noon, there is no expected impact on France-bound transport. However, they caution that the situation could change quickly.

The shift of usual Léman Express users, mostly cross-border employees, to cars due to the disruptions is causing traffic jams at border posts. The situation regarding traffic jams at border posts remains unchanged.

Regarding air travel, only flights operated by Air France may be subject to delays or cancellations. Geneva Airport has not yet released information about the potential impact of the strike on air traffic. Updates on TPG transport can be found here.

It's important to note that the SNCTA union, which had planned to participate in the strike, ultimately postponed its industrial action, avoiding a total blockade in French skies. This postponement is a relief for travellers planning to cross the French border by rail or air.
