Gaia-Devesas Underpass Construction to Affect Rail Services on Porto's Rubi Line

Starting from July 26, 2025, passengers using the Rubi Line between Porto-Campanhã and Aveiro will experience nighttime and weekend service disruptions due to the construction of an underpass at Gaia-Devesas station. This project is part of the Rubi Line project in Porto, Portugal, and is expected to continue until the end of the year.

The construction affects the railway segment between Porto-Campanhã and Aveiro, necessitating restrictions during times with lower passenger volumes to minimise disruptions. Particularly, on weekends from July 26 to August 10 and from September 20 to 28, train service restrictions will apply daily from 11:50 pm to 7:50 am.

To mitigate the impact on passengers during these restrictions, Metro do Porto, in collaboration with Infraestruturas de Portugal and CP, will provide alternative transportation options. Road transfers will be available for CP train passengers, stopping at multiple stations along the route, including Porto-São Bento, Porto-Campanhã, General Torres, Gaia-Devesas, Coimbrões, Madalena, Valadares, Francelos, Miramar, Aguda, Granja, Espinho, Ovar, and Aveiro (for long-distance services).

The construction period for the underpass at the Gaia-Devesas station is expected to last from August 10th to December 12th. The Rubi Line, which has a total length of 6.4 kilometres and consists of eight stations—Santo Ovídio, Soares dos Reis, Devesas, Rotunda, Candal, Arrábida (in Gaia), Campo Alegre, and Casa da Música (in Porto)—is currently under construction between Casa da Música and Santo Ovídio.

The Rubi Line project includes the construction of a new crossing over the Douro River, the D. Antónia Ferreira Bridge, and the Ferreirinha Bridge, exclusive for metro, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic. The initial cost of the project was 435 million euros, but it is now expected to increase by 50 million euros, with the possibility of further increases.

Metro do Porto announced the construction of an underpass at the Gaia-Devesas station as part of the Rubi Line project. The project's completion date is currently set for the end of 2026, but the bridge is only expected to be completed in 2027, with finishing work being the main issue. Work will also restrict rail traffic on weekdays from August 11th to September 25th and from November 26th to December 12th, from 11 pm to 5 am. Train service restrictions will also be in effect on weekends from August 17th to 31st and from October 5th to December 2nd, from 10 pm to 10 am.

Passengers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and to check for updates on the Metro do Porto website or mobile app for the latest information on service disruptions and alternative transportation options.

The Gaia-Devesas Underpass Construction, part of the Rubi Line project in Portugal, will affect rail services on Porto's Rubi Line, requiring alternative transportation options such as road transfers during the construction period, which spans from August 10th to December 12th, 2025. This project, initially estimated at 435 million euros, is expected to also impact the finance sector due to potential cost overruns.
