Disney Prepares for Triumph in Summer Season

With sunshine just around the corner, it's clear that Disney (DIS 1.81%) is already soaking up the financial warmth. The entertainment giant is in a much better financial position than it was this time last year. Disney+ is now in the black, a stark contrast to the $587 million operating loss it reported in the previous quarter's segment.

The good times continued over the weekend, as Disney dispelled any rumors of its animation studio's demise - or even death. Inside Out 2 opened to a staggering $155 million at the domestic box office, well surpassing the $90 million industry predictions. Add in the $140 million it raked in internationally, and the Pixar sequel has grossed a whopping $295 million in total ticket sales.

Emotion and Box Office Gold

The opening of Inside Out 2 is truly impressive. It currently ranks second among animated features, trailing only behind the $183 million debut of Incredibles 2 in 2018. In fact, it almost hit the $162 million premiere weekend for Barbie last year.

The film's success doesn't seem to be stopping any time soon. A whopping 92% of the critics polled by Rotten Tomatoes are recommending it, while audiences have given it an even higher 96% approval rating. This is a considerable improvement from Disney's last major animated release, Wish, which only managed to secure a 48% approval rate from film critics despite a higher 81% rating from audiences.

This isn't the only positive news for Disney this summer. Next month sees the release of Marvel's Deadpool & Wolverine, followed by Alien: Romulus a month later. The year ends with two highly anticipated sequels to popular franchises, Moana and The Lion King.

Magic in the Magic Kingdom

Disney World's Magic Kingdom remains the most visited theme park globally. It's recently received a few updates and new additions. The highlight was the opening of the Tron Lightcycle Run in the spring of last year, marking the end of the resort's 50th anniversary celebration.

This summer, fans can look forward to new experiences. Tiana's Bayou Adventure started previewing for select guests this month and will officially open on June 28. The popular Country Bear Jamboree will reopen on July 17 with a new show that features countryfied versions of Disney songs from animated films like Aladdin, Zootopia, and The Jungle Book. The new additions are expected to attract more guests and boost merchandise sales.

Replacing the Splash Mountain log flume with an updated storyline based on The Princess and the Frog has proven to be a smart move for Disney. It allows for the exploitation of a popular franchise and offers something new to audiences. Furthermore, the refreshed Country Bear Jamboree, which retains its original characters, boasts a new soundtrack of popular Disney covers, encouraging audiences to revisit old films and stream the new covers.

The new additions are expected to attract more guests this summer and boost merchandise sales. They will also increase the visibility of the source material for these franchises. The entertainment stock knows its stuff, and the summer season has only just begun.
