Disclosed after three decades: Audi's inaugural RS4 model unveiled

In the annals of automotive history, there are stories that remain shrouded in mystery, tales of unrealized projects and forgotten prototypes. One such story is that of the Audi 100 RS4 prototype, a daring experiment that, even if never commercialized, holds importance in the brand's history.

The Audi 100 RS4 prototype, recently discovered after 30 years, offers a fascinating glimpse into the genesis of the RS range. This prototype, with its vibrant blue Nogaro sport seats, Nardi steering wheel, and aluminum sphere gearshift knob, was a testament to Audi's pioneering vision and its collaboration with Porsche.

The Audi 100 RS4 prototype was powered by a turbocharged 2.2-liter five-cylinder engine, continuing the lineage from the Audi 200 turbo quattro 20V’s powertrain. This engine, distinctive for its five-cylinder configuration, was a key part of Audi’s performance models in that era.

It's unclear why the Audi 100 RS4 did not go into production, but it may have been due to conflicts with the development of the RS2 Avant or the S6 Plus. Regardless, the prototype serves as a reminder of the ideas, dreams, and sometimes secrets that lie behind every iconic model.

The Audi 100, which transitioned into the Audi A6 by 1994, was the platform for the original “S4” model, produced from 1991–1994. This performance version of the Audi 100 saloon used a five-cylinder engine inherited from the Audi 200.

Contrary to popular belief, the first Audi RS4 was based on the Audi A4 platform, not the Audi 100. The earliest high-performance Audi model related to the “S4” name was actually based on the Audi 100 platform.

| Model | Platform | Production Years | Engine | |-------------------|------------------|------------------|---------------------------------| | Audi 100 S4 | Audi 100 C4 | 1991–1994 | Turbocharged 2.2L five-cylinder | | First Audi RS4 | Audi A4 B5 | 1999 onwards | V6 or V8 engines depending on generation |

The Audi 100 RS4 prototype remains a significant piece of history in the genesis of the RS range, a testament to Audi's daring spirit and its commitment to performance. As we continue to uncover these hidden gems, we are reminded of the rich tapestry of automotive history that lies before us.
