In a significant move, Banco Santander has decided to consolidate its media buying efforts across multiple European and U.S. markets under the management of Dentsu International and its agencies, Dentsu X and Carat.

This consolidation comes after a six-month international agency review and a competitive pitch, with Banco Santander seeking a single agency partner to manage all its markets.

In Spain, Portugal, and the U.K., Carat will take the reins, managing media investments for Banco Santander. On the other hand, Dentsu X will handle media duties for the bank in the U.S. and Poland.

The decision to consolidate is driven by several strategic goals. Streamlining media strategy and buying processes is one such aim, with the consolidation expected to increase efficiency across major markets.

Leveraging Dentsu International’s global scale and expertise in media and digital marketing is another key factor. This move is expected to optimise spend and performance in key regions like Europe and the U.S.

Cost reduction and operational simplification also play a significant role. Given Banco Santander's concurrent cost-cutting efforts, such as substantial job layoffs reported in its UK operations, this consolidation signals a broader efficiency drive.

Enhancing integration and consistency of brand communications across multiple channels and markets is another benefit of this consolidation. By working with one agency partner, Banco Santander aims to ensure a unified and cohesive brand message across its various markets.

Leah Meranus, chief media officer of Dentsu X U.S., expressed her delight at being chosen as Santander's U.S. media AOR, calling it an amazing opportunity.

This consolidation marks a significant step for Banco Santander as it continues to optimise its media strategy and operations, aligning with industry trends towards greater efficiency, global scale, and brand consistency.

In alignment with its strategic goals, Banco Santander has appointed Carat for media investments in Spain, Portugal, and the U.K., while Dentsu X manages media duties in the U.S. and Poland. This consolidation is aimed at increasing efficiency, leveraging Dentsu International's expertise, reducing costs, and enhancing brand consistency across multiple markets.
