PostNord Bids Adieu to Letter Delivery Services

Denmark's PostNord terminates letter delivery services

PostNord, the Danish post operator, has made the tough call to discontinue its letter delivery service, leaving 1,500 employees out of job by the end of 2025.

Goodbye, Letters, Hello, Digital Age

In a statement, CEO Kim Pedersen blamed the decision on the rapid shift towards digital communication, leading to a staggering 90% decrease in letter volumes since 2000. With the decline showing no signs of abating, the letters market is no longer profitable.

The transition away from letters has been swift. Between 2023 and 2024, volumes dwindled by 30%.

Breaking Free from Shackles

Last year, PostNord found relief from its government-mandated obligation to deliver mail to every household in Denmark. This political change meant a loss of millions of kroner in state support and resulted in a hike in the cost of sending a letter to 29 kroner. However, the increased price failed to cover the losses.

Seizing the Future

Of the 2,200 employees working in the letter service, 700 will be offered positions elsewhere within the organization. The unfortunate side of this restructuring involves saying goodbye to 1,500 colleagues.

Pedersen said, "For us to have a sustainable business, we need to adapt, and that means we have to make some difficult decisions."

Promise of a New Dawn

PostNord Denmark will continue to deliver parcels post-name change. The Swedish arm of the company will still handle letter delivery. PostNord also offers parcel delivery in Norway and Finland.

Initially merged with Post Danmark in 2009, PostNord is jointly owned by the Danish and Swedish states, with the Swedes holding 60% and Denmark 40%.

A Long and Winding Road

  • Digital Age Dilemma: The decline in letter delivery is a reflection of the world moving towards digital communication.
  • Adapt or Fall Behind: As the volumes of letters decrease, companies like PostNord need to adapt to survive, focusing on areas with potential growth, such as parcel delivery.
