Delta Jet Escapes Disaster: Tailfin Sliced Off in Atlanta Collision

A Delta Air Lines regional jet had a narrow escape at Atlanta Hartsfield Airport on September 10, 2024. The plane's tailfin was sliced off in a collision with an Airbus A350, but only one flight attendant was lightly injured.

The incident occurred when the wing tip of the passing Airbus A350 struck the tail of the stationary regional jet, which was waiting to enter the runway for takeoff. The regional jet, with the registration N302PQ, had stopped short of the runway entrance by around 56 feet, putting it within striking distance of the A350. The Captain of the A350 was looking out for potential conflicts on another taxiway and did not see the regional jet on his right-hand side.

Delta sent the damaged plane for extensive repairs instead of writing it off. Engineers worked on it for 12 months. The plane was photographed outside the hangar with a new tail section last month. It completed a short test flight on September 24, 2025, before being flown to Middle Georgia Regional Airport, where it has remained since.

The incident at Atlanta Hartsfield Airport on September 10, 2024, resulted in a close call for the Delta Air Lines regional jet. Despite the damage, the plane was repaired and returned to service after 12 months. It is now at Middle Georgia Regional Airport.
