Decrease in Orders for Electrical and Digital Sector According to ZVEI
The German electrical and digital industry has shown a mixed performance in the first half of 2025, with some areas experiencing growth and others facing challenges.
According to recent reports, the industry's aggregated revenue for the first seven months of 2025 was €127.5 billion, marking a 0.9% year-on-year increase. This growth was primarily driven by business with foreign partners, which saw a 3.5% year-on-year increase, reaching €68.5 billion. Notably, foreign revenue in July 2025 alone reached €10.1 billion, a significant 10.1% year-on-year increase.
However, the industry's orders saw a different trend. The industry recorded an order increase of 3.6% for the first seven months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. However, July 2025 saw a 8.9% decrease in orders compared to the previous year. This decline was more pronounced in domestic orders, which decreased by 28.9%, while foreign orders grew by 12.2%.
The Eurozone and third countries also contributed to the industry's foreign sales. Business with customers from the Eurozone in July 2025 was €4.0 billion, a 17.3% year-on-year increase, and business with third countries was €6.1 billion, a 6.4% year-on-year increase. The Eurozone saw a 7.0% increase in orders from foreign customers between January and July 2025, while third countries showed a 13.7% increase in orders from foreign customers during the same period.
Despite the growth in foreign sales, the aggregated industry output for the first seven months of 2025 was 1.4% lower than the corresponding value in 2024. The price-adjusted production of electrical and electronic goods in Germany in July 2025 was 3.1% higher than in July 2024.
The industry's employment figures also paint a mixed picture. At the end of the first half of 2025, the industry employed 879,200 people, 1.8% fewer than a year ago. However, short-term employment in the industry currently stands at 30,800 people.
In July 2025, the industry's revenue was €18.8 billion, a 6.9% year-on-year increase. Domestic revenue in July 2025 was €8.7 billion, a 3.1% year-on-year increase.
Despite the mixed results, the industry continues to be a significant contributor to Germany's economy, and efforts are being made to address the challenges and capitalise on the opportunities for growth.
