DB to Double Track Lübbenau–Cottbus Line for Half-Hourly Berlin Service
Deutsche Bahn (DB) is set to commence a significant expansion project on the Lübbenau–Cottbus line, aiming to provide a stable half-hourly service between Berlin and Cottbus. The project, which has been long-discussed, will begin in late 2026, closing the line for a year.
DB awarded a major contract in September 2025 for the double-tracking expansion and has since been executing planning. The expansion will involve building a second track, overhead lines, and modernizing signaling technology on the 29-kilometer route. Additionally, twelve level crossings, six railway bridges, and 18 crossings will be adapted or expanded.
The stations Raddusch, Kunersdorf, and Kolkwitz will receive a second platform, improving passenger flow and capacity. During the closure, replacement services will be provided for travelers to minimize disruption.
Upon completion in late 2027, trains will run on the new second track, significantly enhancing service frequency and reliability. This expansion supports structural change in Lusatia and is expected to boost development in the region.
