Customs Seize 836 Untaxed E-Vapes, Knife in Aachen Raid

In a significant operation, the Aachen customs office has seized a substantial amount of untaxed and potentially unsafe e-vaping products from a kiosk in Euskirchen. The seizure, which included over 800 e-vapes, also led to the discovery of a one-handed knife and over 1 kg of untaxed water pipe tobacco.

The raid uncovered a trove of untaxed goods, with the e-vapes found both in the sales area and hidden above an intermediate ceiling. The e-vapes, totalling 836 units, were either untaxed or non-roadworthy, posing a potential safety risk to users. Additionally, a one-handed knife was found freely accessible on a table within the shop, which was secured by officials and handed over to the local police. The person responsible for the knife's accessibility was identified as a 12-year-old boy.

The seizure also included over 1 kg of water pipe tobacco without a tax stamp. As of July 1, 2022, nicotine-containing substances for e-cigarettes have been subject to tobacco tax, with the rate set to increase to 0.26 cents per milliliter from January 1, 2025. Disposable e-cigarettes can only be sold in Germany with a maximum content of two milliliters. A tax evasion procedure has been initiated against the 19-year-old seller involved.

The customs office's operation has resulted in the removal of a significant amount of untaxed and potentially hazardous e-vaping products from the market. The seizure also led to the recovery of a dangerous knife and the initiation of a tax evasion investigation. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of proper regulation and taxation in the e-vaping industry to ensure the safety of consumers and the integrity of the market.
