Criticism intensifies over the proposed Königsufer development plan

In the heart of Dresden, a city known for its rich history and progressive spirit, a debate is unfolding over the redesign of the King's Promenade at Augustus Bridge. The Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club (ADFC), Dresden's cycling advocacy group, has voiced its concerns about the current plans, arguing that they fail to provide a proper connection for cyclists to access the bridge.

Edwin Seifert, the chief of the Dresden ADFC, leads the charge, urging the city to reconsider its plans. The key issue, according to the ADFC, is the lack of dedicated cycle paths or safe links to the bridge, particularly on the side where the future Narrenhäusel is planned.

The city's current plan for King's Promenade includes a wide detour for cyclists leading to the Ministry of Finance, a route that the ADFC believes is not practical or safe. Instead, they propose a dedicated and integrated cyclist connection to the Augustus Bridge as part of the redesign. This would ensure that cyclists can cross the bridge conveniently and safely, improving overall accessibility and promoting sustainable transport in Dresden.

The future Narrenhäusel, a planned structure, is located where the current single ramp for cyclists is situated at the Blockhaus. The ADFC suggests that the cycling path should be rerouted to go around the future Narrenhäusel to avoid congestion and potential increases in cycling traffic at the current single ramp.

The Dresden ADFC remains critical of the first draft of the King's Promenade redesign, expressing concern that the proposed detour may not be used frequently. They fear that cyclists, according to the ADFC, might concentrate on the current single ramp at the Blockhaus, increasing cycling traffic in an already congested area.

The redesign of King's Promenade at the Augustus Bridge is currently under debate, with a first draft presented to the city council. The Dresden ADFC continues to advocate for better cycling infrastructure in the King's Promenade redesign, hoping to see a more cyclist-friendly solution in the final plans.
