Bavarian Economy Slams Tightened Border Controls as Economic Liability

The Bavarian economy has levied criticism against the increased border checks at the Austrian border, with the Munich and Upper Bavaria chapter of the IHK pointing to significant losses in the Berchtesgaden region due to hour-long supply delays.

Main manager Manfred Goessl expressed his concerns, stating that retail, hospitality, and hotel sales have dipped by as much as 20% due to these stringent controls. Furthermore, companies are reporting extended delivery delays and uncertainties in supply traffic, along with substantial delays for commuters.

The IHK has called for a more balanced implementation of these border measures, which are part of the election platform of the CDU and CSU. In response, Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) has increased border scrutiny as one of his initial actions upon taking office. CSU leader Markus Söder has pushed for an augmentation of federal police to enhance border and railway controls. Remarks of this sort have been previously condemned by the German Industry and Commerce Association. Goessl, in turn, has urged caution in executing these measures to avoid undue distress to the economy.

Although open rebuke from the Bavarian economy towards CSU policy is rare, the association has been hesitant to air dissent given the presence of several CSU politicians in leadership positions.

The stricter border controls have raised concerns within Germany and across Europe regarding their potential impact on local economies that rely on cross-border trade, labor, and tourism. Similarly, these measures have sparked political criticism and legal challenges when enacted by other member states.

  1. The employment policy within the IHK (Industry and Commerce Association) and various businesses in Bavaria, especially in the Berchtesgaden region, is being negatively affected by the tightened border controls.
  2. The increased finance costs and uncertainties in business operations, due to extended delivery delays and supply traffic uncertainties, are significant concerns in thecontext of current border measures, which are part of the CDU and CSU election platform.
  3. The controversial implementation of stricter border controls in the field of politics, particularly by the CSU, has stirred general-news discussions and debates in finance, business, and crime-and-justice sectors, with calls for more balanced approaches to avoid unnecessary economic strain.
