The Long-Awaited Expansion of A72 Nearing Completion, Expected by Summer!
Construction on A72, a long-dormant project, is nearly finished after more than two decades. - Construction progressing, nearing completion on A72 project after over two decades
Let's talk about the big news, shall we? The A72 construction project between Leipzig and Chemnitz is finally nearing its end, ya heard that? By summer, the route from Leipzig interchange to Zwenkau junction will be open to traffic for the first time, according to a rep from the Federal Highway Authority. That means we're in the homestretch now, mate!
Currently, traffic heading to Chemnitz is still cruisin' along two temporary lanes on the Leipzig-bound roadway. But don't worry, construction is progressing nicely. The grand finale - the completion of the A72 gap linking with A38, both roadways, and all lanes - is scheduled for 2026. But there's still a bit of spit and polish needed, including slathering on a special noise-reducing asphalt.
This 162-kilometer highway connection from Bavarian Vogtland to Leipzigvia Chemnitz has been under construction since 2003, bit by bit. The final stretch before Rotha in the Leipzig district to A38 south of Leipzig was an especially tricky nut to crack, what with the massive coal dumping areas crossing over. Painstaking ground compaction was required for the highway construction.
