Construction of the new Carola Bridge in Dresden to be completed by 2031
The iconic Carolabridge in Dresden, Germany, is currently undergoing a full demolition process, following the collapse of a major section on September 11, 2024 [1]. The renovation work had started in 2019, but due to the collapse, a complete rebuilding is necessary.
The city council has decided on a four-lane replacement for the bridge. Tender documents for the new Carolabridge will be published in early September, and four offices will be commissioned to create concrete designs for the new bridge. The best design among those presented will be implemented.
In a positive turn of events, the demolition of the old bridge has provided new views of the old town. The terrace embankment on both sides of the Elbe will be passable again from mid-September, and repairs on the roadway and footpaths of the terrace embankment will be completed by then.
Regarding the Elbe cycle path, repairs will be assessed after the conclusion of the film nights at the end of August. The Elbe cycle path on the New Town side is expected to be usable again by mid-October.
For those eagerly awaiting the return of the Carolabridge, the designs created by the offices will be presented to the public and discussed at the end of May 2026. The new Carolabridge is scheduled for completion by the year 2031.
