Construction of Bay Street Bridge faces delay due to complications in the supply chain, city officials announce
The City of Victoria has announced a delay in the start of maintenance work on the Point Ellice Bridge, originally scheduled to begin this fall. The work, which was expected to address an existing drainage system issue and involve the replacement of components to allow the bridge to expand and shrink with temperature changes, will now commence in early 2026.
The delay is due to supply chain issues, causing a hold-up in the arrival of some necessary parts. The City is awaiting their confirmation before starting the maintenance work. The work will also include the replacement of the bridge's deck joints and the closure of traffic in the eastbound lane of the bridge.
Initially, the maintenance work was planned to begin on Oct. 7, 2022. However, this date has been rescheduled, and the public had been forewarned that traffic in the eastbound lane of the Point Ellice Bridge, commonly known as the Bay Street Bridge, would be closing this fall for the work. Unfortunately, this closure has been postponed.
The maintenance work on the Point Ellice Bridge will involve the replacement of the old drainage system and will be carried out by crews. The work is essential to ensure the longevity and safety of the bridge. The City of Victoria will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
