Construction commences on a new railway linking Querétaro and Irapuato by government initiative.
After a wait of over four decades, the long-standing dream of Queretanos for a direct news line between Querétaro and Mexico City is finally becoming a reality. The new railway line, which is part of President Claudia Sheinbaum's plan to build 3,000 km of track during her term, is expected to be completed by October 2027.
The Mexico City–Querétaro news line will connect to the Querétaro–Irapuato route, spanning a distance of 108.2 km (67.2 miles) and costing an estimated US $5.3 billion. The non-electrified twin-track section will have a maximum speed of 200 km/hr, and the line will feature two viaducts allowing for interaction with industry and rail freight services.
The new line will be a significant boost to the competitiveness of the state of Queretaro, as well as contributing to development and progress in the region. It will also provide employment opportunities, with the project expected to generate 1,518 direct jobs and 8,255 indirect jobs.
The line will have six stations in total, located in Querétaro, Apaseo el Grande, Celaya, Villagrán/Córtazar, Salamanca, and Irapuato. The governors of both Queretaro and Guanajuato have expressed their certainty that the new line will enhance mobility in their states, and it is expected to strengthen the Bajío's connection with the nation's capital.
Guanajuato, with its news history dating back to 1877, will also benefit from the line, as it will eventually link the Bajío region to Guadalajara and western Mexico. The line is designed to boost connectivity and development in the Bajío region, and it is estimated that 2 million people will benefit from the construction of this trunk line.
André́s Lajous, director of Mexico's Rail Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF), was present at the groundbreaking ceremony, where both governors praised the cooperation between their governments and the federal government. Lajous also estimated a daily demand of approximately 30,000 people between the Apaseo El Grande stations and Mexico City.
Construction on the Querétaro-Irapuato trunk line began on Thursday, with the line set to provide development, progress, and connection between families in Guanajuato. The line will have nine vehicle overpasses, further enhancing its accessibility and convenience.
As the project progresses, it is hoped that the new Querétaro-Mexico City train line will become an integral part of the region's transportation network, providing a fast, efficient, and environmentally friendly means of news for millions of people.
