Construction begins on the Honolulu rail project's CCGS section, led by HART.
The Honolulu Rail Project, a significant initiative aimed at connecting and enhancing the accessibility of Oʻahu, took a major step forward with the groundbreaking ceremony for the City Center Guideway and Stations (CCGS) segment on August 11. The event marked the beginning of construction on the next phase of the Honolulu rail system, which is expected to bring the rail system into the heart of downtown Honolulu.
Mayor Rick Blangiardi hailed the groundbreaking as a significant milestone in the journey towards a better connected and accessible Oʻahu. The CCGS segment, he said, lays the foundation for the future of the island and for developing sustainable transportation alternatives.
The CCGS segment, approximately 3.3 miles long, includes six stations and will end at the Kaʻākaukukui (Civic Center) station. The construction contract was awarded in August 2024, with design and planning commencing shortly after. Utility relocations downtown are scheduled to be completed by Q2 2025, and in Dillingham by Q1 2026. Guideway construction is set to start in summer 2025, with shaft drilling already underway earlier in the year. Station construction is expected to start about two years after initial groundwork, around 2027–2028. The entire segment is scheduled for completion by 2030, enabling transit expansion into urban Honolulu.
The ceremony took place at the future site of the Ka'ākaukukui Station in Kaka'ako, Hawaii. The Kahauiki Station marks the beginning of the CCGS segment, and the Ka'ākaukukui Station will be located just east of the intersection of Halekauwila Street and South Street.
Lori Kahikina, HART Executive Director and CEO, expressed gratitude to partners and HART staff for their efforts in making the CCGS project possible. Kahikina emphasised that cooperation and perseverance will be used to overcome challenges and deliver the project within budget and on schedule for the taxpayers of Honolulu.
With the CCGS segment under construction, the third segment of the Skyline is also being built, which will bring the rail system into the downtown area. The completion of the CCGS segment is a critical step towards bringing Skyline further into urban Honolulu. The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) looks forward to continuing its work on the Honolulu Rail Project and delivering a more connected and sustainable transportation system for the island.
